- It only
records web activity of my computer, why ?
Firstly, let's explain the different between hub and
switch.
There are two kinds of networking devices to link
computers in a office or home. one is hub, another
is switch. They look a lot alike: There is a row of
RJ-45 jacks, which called "ports.", each port can link
to a computer. both hub and switch can transfer data
from one computer to another, but in different way,
a hub works
by duplicating the data
packets received via one port and making it available to
all ports, therefore allowing data sharing between all
devices connected to the hub. Unlike a hub which simply
replicates what it receives on one port onto all the
other ports, a switching hub keeps a record of the MAC
addresses of the devices attached to it. When the switch
receives a data packet, it forwards the packet directly
to the recipient device by looking up the MAC address.
So, in a hub network, you
can install WebSpy on anyone computer on the network, it
can monitor web activity of the whole network.
But in a switch network, installing WebSpy on one of the
computer may not work, because other computer's data
packets doesn't pass through this computer. You must
install WebSpy on the gateway computer, because all the
outgoing internet traffic must passes through this
computer. In a switch network that don't use a computer
as the gateway, there is another solution. currently,
most of the switches support "roving analysis port" or
"port mirroring", which is a
method of monitoring network traffic that forwards a
copy of each incoming and outgoing packet to that
special port where the packet can be studied. in
this case, what you need to do is to configure a "roving
analysis port", connect your computer to this port, and
install WebSpy on this computer. how to configure the
"roving analysis port" please refer to the document of
the switch manufactory.
